The Malwa circuit, day by day

Malwa packs two Jyotirlingas, a Shakti Peeth and a ruined Afghan-era fort city into a comfortable four-to-six day loop.

• Ujjain — Mahakaleshwar, Kaal Bhairav, Harsiddhi, Mangalnath and the Ram Ghat aarti. One full day.
• Omkareshwar — the island Jyotirlinga and Mamleshwar, on the Narmada. A half-day drive from Ujjain.
• Maheshwar — Ahilya Fort, riverside temples and the famous handloom. Sunset on the ghats is the moment.
• Mandu — Jahaz Mahal, Rupmati's Pavilion and Jami Masjid. A full day of monuments; best in the monsoon when it turns green.
• Nalkheda — Maa Baglamukhi, one of only three major Baglamukhi shrines in India. A focused day trip from Ujjain.
